Abstract:
This short essay looks at a conduit to identity, by tracing through history, how emblematic dishes were developed and what their impact on shaping the Macanese identity and behavior was. There are innumerous authors who have written about Macanese identity. Some based on historical background namely on the founding and subsequent development of the territory, others on the sociological interaction of European and oriental people, religion and culture. In today’s world of instant communication and globalization, Macanese Gastronomy continues to provide a sociological and behavioral identity for the Macanese still living in Macau as well as for those who immigrated to every corner of the world making a success of their endeavors. These dishes of celebration provide a window and understanding to who the Macanese are and why they feel the way they do regardless of where they were born and why theyn continue to feel a cultural connection to Macau.
