Goals

  1. To make an effective contribution to the theoretic debate on state building, fragility and failure.
  2. Use and refine the methodology for identifying and monitoring state failure and fragility.
  3. Analyse political, economic and sociological conditions in East Timor of relevance to this debate.
  4. Place these conditions in their proper regional and international context.
  5. Compare East Timor to similar cases in the region such as the Solomon Islands or Papua New Guinea.
  6. Assess the United Nations' role in state building missions and the real impact of international administration of East Timor.
  7.  Disseminate the research project's findings to other academics and the general public, using channels, such as the internet, social networks, articles, books, conferences and seminars.

  • Publication of the final report entitled “Dimensions of State Building: Timor-Leste in Focus”.
  • Creation of a Facebook page entitled State Building Monitor and a blog called State Building and State Fragility Monitor.

  • Master's thesis “’The Artists´ Role in the National Identity Building of East Timor, by Marco Vallino.
