Goals

In an international context in which China is playing an increasingly important role in the global economy, it is of particular interest to study expansion of Chinese investment in Africa and, for Portugal in particular, the advance of the Portuguese language as a common denominator, via Macao, in China's relations with the Portuguese-speaking African countries.

  1. To analyse Macao's new strategic function and the extension of Chinese economic influence in these countries (amount and sectors of investment and development aid)
  2. To assess to what extent Portugal can play an important role as a facilitator and interlocutor in this new framework
  3. To train young researchers specialising in these areas, with FCT support.
